How to Choose a Graduation Dress
Graduation is quite a milestone in everyone’s life, isn’t it? Finishing college is often the fulfillment of a dream. After years of hard work and studying, the much-anticipated day to celebrate this achievement finally arrives!
You can rent, buy, or even have your graduation dress custom-made, but my main tip is: do it as far in advance as possible!
The first step in choosing your graduation dress is to look for inspiration. Check out lots of photos of party dresses, notice which colors you like the most, which styles feel like "you," and which design you imagine yourself wearing on that special day.

Then, it’s a great idea to try on a few styles to see if what you imagined is really what you want. Sometimes, we’re convinced we love a dress when we see it in a picture on the model, but when we try it on, it doesn’t look or feel as we expected. However, don’t try on too many dresses, or you’ll end up confused!
If you’ve ever watched the American bridal dress reality show “Say Yes to the Dress” (or its Brazilian version, “O Vestido Ideal”), you’ve probably seen a bride at the famous Kleinfeld store saying she had tried on more than 50 or even 100 dresses and still hadn’t found the perfect one. And you’ve probably heard the host, Randy, advising that trying on too many dresses is not ideal. Well, the same rule applies to graduation dresses, okay?
It’s a great idea to try on a few different styles with various fabrics so you can figure out what you like best. Let me share a personal example: when I was searching for my graduation dress, I was convinced I wanted a minimalist dress—no embroidery, no sparkle—just something with a great fit and high-quality fabric. Then, I tried on an embroidered dress and loved it. After that, I tried on a dress with lots of sparkle and fell in love with it too, even though it was nothing like what I had imagined wanting. That’s why it’s good to give a chance to dresses that are outside of what you initially envisioned.
When it comes to timing, it’s important to start looking for your dress a few months before the party. Graduation parties typically happen around the same time, so if you leave it until the last minute, the dress you liked might already be rented out, or the designer/seamstress might not have enough time to create your dress.
If you decide to buy your graduation dress, it gives you a bit more flexibility with timing. However, it’s still a good idea to leave yourself some extra time, as you’ll most likely need to have alterations done or adjust the hemline.
As for the color of the dress, if there’s no required color, choose one that makes you feel good and complements your skin tone. We’ve selected several beautiful graduation dresses from Chicloth for you to draw inspiration from—come check them out!
